Choose JPG/JPEG for a photo when the receiving app requires that format. Choose PNG or WebP when you need transparency. WebP supports both lossy and lossless encoding and is useful for web images. GIF and TIFF can carry multiple frames or pages. The right format depends on compatibility, file size and the image features you need.
Changing a filename from .webp to .jpg does not convert its contents. This converter decodes the source and creates a file in the selected format. Transparent areas become white in JPG output. Converting a JPG to PNG does not remove its background or restore detail already lost to JPEG compression.
Conversion can increase file size, especially when moving from a compressed photo to PNG. PNG exports may optimize similar colors according to the quality setting, so review the result. Multi-frame images need PNG, WebP, GIF or TIFF output; JPG and BMP conversion is rejected for those files. Exports remove embedded metadata.
